Bad News Barbie

With the holidays right around the corner, a lot of sellers have begun releasing their holiday products. Barbie is no different. For just $39.99 you can have your very own holiday edition Barbie doll! Or you could opt for the African American version of the doll, it’s up to you. It is interesting to me that someone would spend almost forty dollars on a piece of plastic with some fabric wrapped around it and then give it to their small child to idolize. I may not ever do it for my children, but millions of consumers do purchase the special edition of the doll each year.

Holiday Barbie comes in two colors: black and white. This in itself is sad, because it shows racial differences. It is saying that two girls of different colors cannot have the same doll. The parents will most likely buy the doll that most resembles their daughter’s (or son’s) skin color. This will make the child more likely to look up to the doll and aspire to be like it. TLC did a documentary on it called "I'm A Living Doll", showing how kids can be affected by the idealized look of a doll and do anything to look like it. Thus eating disorders happen, and children want plastic surgery to “fix” what is only broken in their minds. As you can probably tell, I hate Barbie dolls and everything they stand for and you can make up your own mind if I am right to do so or not.
